18 February 2021

The Spanish government has formally confirmed to the UK government that UK nationals who were legally residing in Spain before 1 January 2021, and as such are beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement, can use any of the following documents to prove their residence status when entering Spain.

Are you a UK S1 holder living in Spain? You can now apply for your new European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) at nhs.uk/ehic. To apply for a new EHIC, you will need to have registered your S1 form with the INSS (Spanish social security office). Lockdown has meant a lack of appointments to get this done. If this applies to you, the official government line is that your EHIC entitlements still continue and you will still be able to apply for your new EHIC once you have managed to register with the INSS, even if that is after 31st December 2020.

Today is 100 days until the transition period comes to an end.

As part of rolling programme of Brexit communications, the British Embassy in Madrid has released a short video reassuring Brits in Spain about their protected rights after 31 December and about the importance of registering for residency at this late stage.
